Course Overview

In recent years, the government has become more committed than ever to increase the number of students in schools gaining language qualifications. Therefore, there is a high demand for more modern language teachers.

Having the ability to speak a foreign language not only improves the cultural knowledge of students but it also widens job prospects in countries other than the UK. In learning a new language, students can begin to think more independently and value others more.

Teaching modern languages should develop students’ ability and ambition to communicate with native speakers through speech and writing. They should also be encouraged to step beyond their own cultural boundaries and learn new ways to see the world.

When you teach Modern Languages at secondary level, you will ensure that pupils:

  • Develop the ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers in speech and writing and have the ability to convey what they want to say with accuracy
  • Express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and with fluency
  • Can listen to and understand clearly articulated standard speech at near normal speed
  • Deepen knowledge about how language works and improve their vocabulary for independent use and understanding of extended language in a range of contexts
  • Acquire new knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking through the ability to understand and respond to authentic spoken and written material
  • Develop language learning skills for both immediate use and to prepare them for further language study, higher education or employment
