Course Overview

A fundamental subject for the education of students in England, as a religious education teacher you will help students to understand and appreciate different beliefs, practises and religions. 

Being able to understand different beliefs and cultures is an extremely important life skill that you will feel gratified to teach as you prepare students to welcome new religious approaches and individual opinions in their everyday lives.

When you teach Religious Education at secondary level, you will ensure that pupils:

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs, such as atheism and humanism
  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, teachings, and sources of wisdom and authority
  • Develop their ability to construct well-informed, well-argued, balanced and structured written arguments and demonstration their breadth of knowledge on the subject
  • Have opportunities to engage with questions of belief, value, meaning, purpose, truth, and their influence on human life
  • Challenge themselves to reflect on and develop their own values, beliefs and attitudes in relation to what they have learned
